Echocardiogram (Echo)

What is an Echocardiogram?

This test is for determining how your heart and heart valve is performing. It uses sound waves to produce the live image of your heart. These images are very helpful for finding out blood clots in the heart, fluid in the sac. It is the key test for checking the health of your heart muscle, especially when you have a heart attack. It is a painless process.

Types:

  • Transthoracic echocardiography – it is a painless and noninvasive method.
  • Transesophageal echocardiography – it does not show you definitive images. Here, a smaller transducer is inserted through your throat to get a better view of your problem.
  • Stress echocardiogram – Doctors check your heart performance under stress.
  • Three-dimensional echocardiography – it takes multiple images from different angles.
